THE ECSTASY OF MADNESS

The Artists’ Vineyard project at Mas Blanch i Jové winery incorporates this year a work by visual artist Alba E. Peligero, titled The Ecstasy of Madness, currently exhibited as a temporary installation among the vineyards of Les Garrigues.

Alba E. Peligero (Asturias, 1990 – currently based in Vilanova de Sau, Osona) has developed an artistic language characterized by the use of industrial waste materials, especially recycled scrap metal. Her sculptures take on fragmentary forms that break away from any formal hierarchy, inviting the viewer to construct their own interpretative narrative.

The artist has expressed that the meaning of the work is deliberately indeterminate, built upon multiple questions raised to the audience, thus generating spaces for critical reflection.

Description of the work

The Ecstasy of Madness is a large-scale metal sculptural construction—approximately 7.5 meters high by 5 meters wide—composed of welded scrap fragments that form a structure resembling a distorted arch. The piece evokes natural forms such as waterfalls or the stone columns of the Collbató caves, an inspiration Peligero incorporated after a trip with a friend and the contemplation of the geological spheres in La Sala de las Columnas of that site.

The sculpture rises as a visual oxymoron: a chaotic entity that simultaneously integrates harmoniously into the vineyard landscape. According to the artist, “madness can be another way of seeing, another way of touching the world; this ecstasy is not exaltation but part of a path that has not always been defined with the same intensity,” encouraging the public to share their own perceptions of the piece.

Context and trajectory of the project

Peligero’s official project dates back four years, when she presented an initial sketch entitled Ecstasy to the Microscopies project call for Manresa’s Green Belt. Although not selected at that time, the artist persevered and continued to develop the work into its current form, renamed The Ecstasy of Madness to better reflect its paradoxical and evolving nature.

The piece is currently displayed as a temporary installation throughout next year (2026). The winery is considering the possibility of making it a permanent addition, depending on its reception by the public.

“Installing The Ecstasy of Madness, as well as presenting the exhibition Katarsi, has meant for me discovering new paths and spaces where the works can travel and enjoy the welcome they need. Engaging in dialogue with the territory, becoming part of its cartographies with respect, is an ongoing challenge…”

“Madness can be another way of seeing, another way of touching the world; this ecstasy is not exaltation but part of a path that has not always been defined with the same intensity”
